Canadian Indigenous Cognitive Assessment
The number of people with dementia diagnoses in First Nations populations has risen significantly over the past decade, signaling the need for culturally appropriate approaches to dementia care. Beginning in 2017, a team of researchers, community partners and a Community Advisory Council (CAC) successfully adapted the Kimberley Indigenous Cognitive Assessment (KICA), a culturally-safe cognitive assessment tool originally developed in the Kimberley region of Australia. The Canadian Indigenous Cognitive Assessment (CICA) is an adapted version of the Kimberly Indigenous Cognitive Assessment, developed by researchers at the Western Australia Centre for Health and Aging. The adapted CICA tool is an outcome of the CCNA Phase I – Team 20 program of research, and the project was led by Dr. Kristen Jacklin. Important research on the CICA continues in CCNA Phase II under the direction of Dr. Jen Walker, including implementation of the CICA and training sessions.
